Should I Boil Boneless Baby Back Ribs Before Throwing Them On The Grill?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under baby back ribs | 12 Comments »

I am about to grill an individual thing(.79lb) of boneless ribs. I usually boil ribs with bones before grilling them. However, would it be cool to grill this without boiling?

No… You should only boil them if they HAVE bones. They are perfectly fine to throw on the grill if they are boneless already. Have fun !

I’ve actually never heard of anyone boiling ribs before grilling them. So going straight to the grill is fine.

Boiling the ribs is to help dissolve the collagen in the ribs. Since your "ribs" lack ribs, there’s really no collagen to be dissolved, so just grilling them should be OK.

A lot of people boil ribs before grilling b/c straight grilling ribs is very tricky to get just right. If you want them to turn out well on the grill, you need to slow grill them for several hours over indirect heat.

I’ve never boiled ribs. I always bbq over indirect coals and let them cook slowly.

you could boil them, some people think that it makes them more tender. I prefer to slow bake them on a low temp for several hours, before grilling. I found that you don’t lose the flavor of the rib that way.

I was reading a cooking magazine yesterday, and in it was an article written by a woman from New England who moved to South Carolina years ago. She said that the secret to her ribs, which were acclaimed to be even better than born and bred Southerners, was boiling them first. She said the meat was so tender and just fell off the bone.

I think it’s a great idea and I can see how it would make the meat that much more tender.

don’t boil them, it takes away the flavor.
if you have time put them in foil and bake at 250 to 300 degrees for a couple of hours then grill (sweet baby rays sauce is the best).
if you don’t have that much time grill them on low heat until tender.
just remember if you ever grill whole slabs of ribs to remove the membrane from the bottom. peel it off with a fork. ribs with the membrane left on are tougher.
    good luck.

Never boil. I season my ribs and put them in a 350 degree oven (uncovered) for 1 1/2 hours and then throw then on the grill. They are perfect and tender every time!!

For great ribs, brown in a skillet with a little oil. mix 1 can cola, 1 can catsup. and 1/2 tsp. ginger. Bake in a 350 oven for 1/12 hr, covered. Uncover and bake another 1/2 hr. You won’t want to ever grill them again . Good eating.

You don’t have to boil them, however, they will not be as tender.
