Actually it is not used as a liquid. It is STORED as a liquid and burned as a vapour. When the cylinder is sitting there you have static liquid with a vapour space above it. When the appliance is turned on, you are drawing off vapour and burning that. This reduces the pressure in the cylinder and the liquid begins to boil to replace the vapour. As the propane changes state from a liquid to a vapour it expands 277 times. That is how we get such a long amount of burn time from a relatively small container

The collar of the cylinder will have a marking of TW## this is the weight of the cylinder in pounds with nothing in it. If it is metric markings it will be T## and be in kilograms. This number will be different from cylinder to cylinder. Not all 20lb cylinders have the same tare weight because of manufacturing differences and materials of construction. The same is true of the capacity which is marked WC## on the collar as well. Some "20lb" cylinders can only hold a little over 19 pounds and some can hold 21 pounds. It depends on those numbers stamped on the collar.

Somebody across the street threw out a gas barbecue grill, and I decided to take it since it’s in nice condition. However, I already have two gas grills so I was wondering if I could use charcoal in it. Is there any way to make it work safely, or would I just end up melting the thing?

yes you can do it. Just remove the tank and all of the apparatuses that were used to supply gas to the grill. You should remember to remove the elements that look like long tents (don’t know the name) because these are what the flame came through and they are unnecessary. You just need an empty shell and a small grate to pile your coals on and the larger grate on top to place your food.
